This month's article is in memory of one of our major contributors to our firearms auctions. His name is James H. Wulff. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 6, 1931 and passed away on March 7, 2010.
Mr. Wulff retired in 1985 from Ford Motor Company where he worked for 28 years as a tool repairman. Prior to this he enlisted and served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1949 to 1955.
James was a decorated veteran of the Korean War serving with the 1st Recon Division. He was one of 30,000 troops (also known as the X Corps) that fought the brutal, seventeen-day battle of Chosin Reservoir. This battle was under the command of Major General Edward Almond and occurred between November 27 and December 13, 1950. In freezing winter weather, James and the rest of the 30,000 United Nations (UN) troops were surrounded by 60,000 Chinese troops. Although completely outnumbered by the Chinese, the UN forces broke out of the encirclement while inflicting crippling losses to the Chinese. James became one of the "Chosin Few" surviving this battle. For more information please visit: Battle of Chosin Reservoir - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following James' tour in Korea, he continued to serve with the U.S. Marine Corp. as an aerial photographer.
In addition to his extremely full life, James was a member of the Korean War Recon Marines, Chosin Reservoir Veterans and the National Rifle Association. He also repaired clocks and was a member of the Association of Watch and Clock Collectors. James was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed restoring old cars. He was a former member of the Thunderbird Club.
